Your child knows in the 1880s the government made another policy shift in the form of the 1887 Dawes Act. This legislation broke reservations up and allotted some of the lands to individual tribal members.
Your child understands the Indigenous land base was severely decreased by the Dawes Act. Reservation land left over after allotment to Indigenous tribal members was either sold to non-Indigenous people or placed in a government trust.
